He knew that life can really only be fully lived by integrating and aspiring to developing oneself to the point where transcendence of the self spontaneously may happen and man evolves into a state of being, rather than becoming something. In a way, Maslow was one of the first western psychologists (if not the first?) to dare introduce the transcendental ideas into his field of expertise, entering the loftier realms of spirituality. Without going into further details at this point, it is, however, important to remember, that the personal levels are not the be all, end all. It is an experience beyond the personal ego, which is why he termed the sixth level self-transcendence. It is an experience that one normally does not forget and that may be experienced in all walks of life. As the name suggests, it is a state beyond any rational thinking, and simply one of those moments where the experiencer has the feeling that the world is standing still. It was an experience he termed “peak experience”. More so, it was something that could be experienced from any hierarchical level. In his final years, Maslow came to realize that there was something else, something deeper and beyond the personal that could be experienced. ![]() What was the sixth level that Maslow added? For that is the key to a happy and contented mind.īut coming back to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Instead of focussing on various abnormal states, Maslow was interested in what makes a mind rest in a happy state. I was fascinated to learn that his hierarchy of needs was really only a small portion of Maslow's work as he – incidentally – focussed on the question as to what makes a mind happy.
